Gray Market, Counterfeits, and Why Authorized Distribution Matters

Jul 5, 2026 · 2 min read · Brooklyn Park, MN

Radiant Pulley exists partly because we got burned as customers: gray-market parts in shiny boxes, "new" components that were clearly repackaged returns, warranties that evaporated when we needed them. Here’s what’s actually going on in those too-good-to-be-true listings.

What gray market means

Gray-market parts are genuine-brand products sold outside the manufacturer’s authorized channel — diverted export stock, liquidated returns, or inventory of unknown age and storage history. The part might be real. But the manufacturer’s warranty usually isn’t, because most brands only honor warranty claims through authorized sellers.

The uglier cousin: counterfeits

Counterfeit brake pads, bearings and electrical parts are a documented, growing problem in online marketplaces. They look right in photos — that’s the point. The difference shows up in friction material composition, metallurgy and tolerances, which is exactly where you don’t want surprises.

How to protect yourself (anywhere you shop)

How we source

Every SKU in our catalog comes through established U.S. distribution — the same supply chain a brick-and-mortar parts counter uses. Brand-new, warrantied, traceable. It means we’ll never be the absolute cheapest listing on the internet. It also means the part in the box is the part you ordered. That’s the trade we’ve chosen, and it’s not changing. More about how we got here is on our story page.
