How to Buy the Right Part the First Time: VIN, Fitment and Part Numbers

Jul 5, 2026 · 2 min read · Brooklyn Park, MN

Wrong-part returns are the single most common headache in online parts shopping — and almost all of them are preventable in the five minutes before you click "buy." Here’s the checklist we’d give a friend.

Year, make, model isn’t enough

Two trucks with the same year and model can take different parts depending on engine, cab configuration, drivetrain, brake package or even production date. That’s why our Shop by Vehicle filter asks for details — and why "fits 2015–2020" in a listing title should never be the whole story.

Your VIN is the answer key

The 17-character VIN on your dashboard or door jamb encodes exactly how your vehicle left the factory. When a listing asks "which engine?" and you’re not sure — the VIN settles it. Keep a photo of it on your phone; every parts counter on earth will thank you.

OE part numbers beat descriptions

If you’re replacing something, the number stamped on the old part is gold. Search by that number and you’ll find the exact replacement and its cross-references — not something that merely looks similar in photos.

Red flags in a listing

When in doubt, ask a human

Fitment questions are literally what we do all day. Send us the VIN and the part you’re after via the contact page — we’d rather spend five minutes checking than process a return that wastes your week.
